In short, we’ll be at the Derbyshire Woodland Festival at Elvaston Castle on 16 & 17 September. And can confirm Matt Ralston will join us on our stall too. See you there for permaculture chat, edible and useful plants, biochar, restored vintage tools, rocket stoves and other life-affirming wholesome awe.

It’s still summer. It’s almost autumn. I’m trying to get into that mindset.

There’s a lot happening here. Seedsaving, pruning, composting. Course planning, display making, plan-hatching.

We have 3 upcoming courses, with spaces left on the composting and forest gardening ones.

A diverse polyculture planting of several layers, in our garden at Belper Lane End.

Inhabiting the edge and celebrating that!

We’re a bit edgy, yeah? You know, not extracting profit, encouraging diversity, upcycling others’ waste. We’re a co-operative plant nursery using permaculture design. The permaculture principle use edges and value the marginal rings true for us, often. Our gardens are edgy too.

The woodland edge is about the most productive ecotone (transition zone) we have. In forest gardening, we look to mimic that. A lot of the plants we grow and sell fit nicely in forest garden guilds, being resilient and hardy. We don’t, however, grow woodland trees – woodlands proliferate quite nicely if permitted.

The Derbyshire Woodland Festival celebrates the abundance of woodlands and the rich cultural heritage associated with them. 16 + 17 September, 10-5. On the edge of Derbyshire, at Elvaston Castle Country Park. (OK, it’s 10 miles from the Nottinghamshire border, but it fits the theme).

Our stall at 2022’s Derbyshire Woodland Festival; it’s set to be even more packed with goodies this year

We’ll be in attendance as one of many traders in the main field, on the edge of the woodland. The green man will be roaming, no doubt there will be delicious grub, all things crafted and fire, and the fun of the fair.

Come talk to us about your garden, pick up some edible and useful additions, and learn a thing or two.

We’ll be running short workshops throughout the weekend, including:

The only way is Ethics – making living make sense in reality. Permaculture as life design.

Get the kids out in the garden – Fixing ‘I’m bored’ and ‘I’m hungry’ in one, over and over, for free!

Reducing plastic in your growing – grow salad, long lasting veg, and are coir/paper pots worth it?

Matt Ralston will be sharing his creations, including jack axes and rocket stoves.
