Earthed Up! is a workers co-operative growing and selling edible and useful plants from our agroecological plant nursery at Belper Lane End, DE56 2DL.

We sell and deliver peat free compost, and our biochar and plant feed as part of our Soil Health Range.

We launched a garden maintenance service in Spring 2024, which has been busy and we’re expanding our team.

Role description

Gardener – Belper Area

Hours: Part-time, variable, flexible. Weekend working may be required. (The flexible aspect is to suit your needs as well as ours)

No guaranteed hours, this depends on jobs. We expect no more than 3 part days a week.

Pay

Gardening: Competitive.

Markets and meetings: £12/hr, rising in April.

Annual leave: 5.6 weeks’ leave per annum = 1.3 weeks.
Spring and summer are busy periods, holiday should be booked with at least 2 weeks notice in liaison with other workers.

Term: This is a 12 week contract, with potential to extend. To start as soon as possible in March or early April 2025.

Garden maintenance work provides the opportunity to work on one-off projects or regular maintenance jobs. Travel costs are paid for.

Key Responsibilities

This role is to cover absence and increase capacity in the team, to be able to take on more regular clients.

  • Pruning, weeding, and general garden upkeep
  • Using hand tools such as secateurs, saws, loppers, and other equipment safely
  • Using electric hedge trimmers and petrol mower to maintain hedges and lawns
  • Moving materials, such as topsoil, brash from pruning.
  • Constructing compost bays and maintaining compost systems
  • Assisting with weekend plant stall operations packing and trading
  • Attending team meetings to plan and schedule work

The role could also include:

  • Conducting consultations and advising clients on plant selection
  • Writing comprehensive plant lists tailored to garden needs
  • Small hard landscaping, for example leveling patios, constructing raised beds, laying paths

Required Skills & Experience

  • Skilled in pruning and tool handling (saws, shears, etc.)
  • Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various conditions
  • Experience with composting and sustainable/regenerative garden practices
  • Excellent communication skills
